Those who like to ride bikes as a family are welcome to join the 2015 Kidical Mass kickoff at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the Delaware Park Rose Garden, and proceed on a leisurely, family-friendly group ride through city neighborhoods.
The goal is to celebrate biking and building awareness that children and families on bicycles are a part of traffic, too.
Advanced bicyclists are free to ride safely on their own in city streets. For all others, organizers recommend you bring child seats, trailers, trail-a-bikes, longtail cargo bikes, box or bucket bikes or tandems. After a brief overview of expectations and the route, socializing and bike show-and-tell, the group will ride together on quiet side streets through the Elmwood Village and Upper West Side.
Riders will stop midway at Elmwood Avenue and Auburn Street for a break and return together to the Delaware Park playground for post-ride play.
Parent or guardians are responsible for the supervision and safety of themselves and their children, and expected to abide by all traffic laws. Helmets are required by state law for children age 13 and younger – and encouraged for all riders.
Kidical Mass is an international series of family-oriented bicycle rides that started in the U.S. in Eugene, Ore. in 2008 and has spread to dozens of communities throughout North America. The rides teach law-abiding bicycle skills to children and their families, and foster rides to practice those skills. For more information, visit facebook.com/KidicalMassBuffalo.
