ALBANY – Sandra Lee’s five-hour breast cancer operation at a New York hospital went well and she is now in recovery, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Tuesday. Lee, who is Cuomo’s longtime girlfriend, revealed last week she was diagnosed with breast cancer. A message on Lee’s Facebook page said Cuomo drove her and her sister this morning to a hospital for the double mastectomy.
“Once Sandra was in the O.R., Governor Cuomo stayed by her side until she fell asleep and the surgeons got to work,” said the message from “Sandra Lee’s team.” Cuomo released a brief statement Tuesday afternoon saying that he is “happy to report that she is doing as well as can be expected and has begun the post-surgery recovery process.” Cuomo and Lee, a celebrity television cook and cookbook author, share a house that she owns in Westchester County. Though they are not married, Lee, 48, is officially considered New York’s first lady for the purposes of being permitted to use state aircraft and vehicles when she is traveling to government-related events with the governor.
