Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga came through with a clutch performance in the semifinal match, then defeated 24-year-old Erin McCarthy to win her second USBC Queens Tournament on Tuesday night at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alleys in Green Bay, Wis.
Johnson opened the championship match with four strikes and led all the way in her 256-202 victory in the title match over the No. 1 seed.
It wasn’t so easy in the next-to-last match of the stepladder finals, however. Johnson fell behind Shannon Pluhowsky after drawing the 7-10 split in the eighth frame, but she struck in the ninth, then struck out in the 10th frame for a 234-225 victory.
Johnson also won the Queens in 2009 and has four other top five finishes in the premier professional women’s bowling event. The victory was worth $20,000 for Johnson as she joined an exclusive club of six multiple winners of the Queens. Millie Ignizio of Rochester and Wendy Macpherson are the only three-time winners of the tourney.
