Buffalo-area golfers dominated the top of the leader board at the fifth New York State Golf Association Men’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown.
The team of Billy Hanes and Jamie Miller avenged their loss in last year’s championship by coming away with a four-stroke victory Monday. Hanes, who plays out of Crag Burn, and Miller, of Wanakah, shot 16-under 128 in the two-day event. In the four-ball format, each golfer on a two-man team plays his own ball throughout the round (four balls in play) and the lowest score among teammates is recorded.
The team of Miller and Hanes carded consecutive rounds of 8-under 64 on the 6,504-yard course. The top four teams on the leader board came from Western New York, with Jeff Wolniewicz (Gowanda) and Billy Gaffney (Crag Burn) finishing second at 12-under 132. The team of Raman Luthra (Crag Burn) and Matt Stasiak (Brookfield) shot the best round Monday, a 9-under 63, that helped them move into third place with a two-day total of 10-under 134. Finishing fourth was the team of Danny Yustin (Transit Valley) and Bob Rosen (Country Club of Buffalo). They shot 9-under 135.
The only local team in the Senior Division (ages 55 and up) was Rich Weber and John Gaffney, both out of Brookfield. They finished 12th with a score of 1-under 143. Both the men’s and senior divisions had 26 teams in the field.
