Bellavia, Dolan make Obenauer final four

Convincing wins by Frank Bellavia Jr. and Tony Dolan on Saturday assured both of slots in Sunday's final four of the 52nd Annual George A. Obenauer Masters Tournament at AMF-Airport Lanes.

Bellavia shot 767, the high series of the tournament so far, and just missed a 300 game in a resounding 229-pin victory over PBA50 Tour pro Jack Jurek of Lackawanna. Jurek shot 538 with a high game of only 185.

The  38-year-old paramedic from Niagara Falls will face Dolan of West Seneca in Sunday's winner's bracket final at 1 p.m.

Dolan was nearly as impressive in his 690-582 victory over Pete Zmozynski of Depew.

Bellavia crossed over and left the 5-pin on his last ball to miss the first 300 game in this year's Masters. His 299 followed games of 225 and 243. He was the top qualifier and a losing finalist in his first Obenauer last year.

Jurek rebounded from his one-sided loss and defeated UB student Andrew Herbert of Eden, 666-585 in the final elimination round of the night. Andy Rettig of Hamburg, who earlier had bowled the second-highest single of the tournament so far with a 278 in his triumph over Derek Pawlowski, was eliminated by Pete Zmozynski of Depew, 567-557.

Smozynski will face Jurek at 1 p.m. on Sunday while Bellavia and Dolan are bowling their match.

Besides Herbert and Rettig, Andy Ochal of Kenmore and Carl Graetz Jr. of Blasdell also survived Saturday night's first elimination round while Geno Walh of Lackawanna, Jim Luebler of Lackawanna and Joe Wagner of Cheektowaga joined Pawlowski on the sidelines.

Herbert then barely hung on to edge Ochal, 669-668, shooting 177 in his final game after a 248 and 244 while Ochal was closing with a 235. Rettig shot a 262 in his 627-568 triumph over Graetz.

The winner of the Jurek-Zmozynski match will take on the loser of Bellavia-Dolan to decide who goes on to the championship match at 3 p.m.
