Jack Eichel scored with 30 seconds left in overtime to give Team USA a 4-3 win over Slovakia Tuesday at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The victory the gave the Americans 16 points in the standings, clinching first place in Group B.
Team USA will face Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
The Americans blew a 3-0 second-period lead and fell behind 4-3 before tying the game on a goal by Charlie Coyle late in the second. There was no scoring in the third, but there were two fights.
“It was great to get the goal there,” said Eichel, who had been the butt of some good-natured ribbing after his first goal on Sunday came from an accidental deflection. “That was a great play by [Justin] Faulk to get the puck up and I don’t think the goalie even saw it.”
Canada, the winner of Group A, routed Australia, 10-1, giving it 49 goals in its seven victories without a loss. Matt Duchene and Jason Spezza had two goals and two assists each, while team captain Sidney Crosby was given the game off.
Canada will play Belarus in the quarterfinals in Prague on Thursday.
