Cheektowaga’s MovieLand 8 Theaters have closed

The MovieLand 8 Theatres in the Thruway Mall in Cheektowaga, which screened second-run films at discount ticket prices, have closed, its owners, JGM Entertainment, announced Monday on the theater’s phone message and Facebook page.

“We are deeply saddened to report this news," JGM said on Facebook. “We have truly loved every moment of serving our customers and we thank you for your support and business over the years.”

JGM opened MovieLand 8 in 2004 in the former Thruway Cinema 8, a discount theater operated by Dipson Theatres, after closing its previous discount moviehouse in Appletree Business Park in Cheektowaga.

Last June the theater owners posted a Facebook message about their need to raise funds to convert to the new digital projectors. Three of the projectors were installed, but five more were needed.

MovieLand 8 offered films for $4, with 50 percent off on Wednesdays and Fridays. Fans on Facebook reacted with gratitude and disappointment.

“Sorry to hear,” one wrote. “Thank you for allowing (affordable) movie nights for families in WNY all of these years. We’ll miss you.”
