DEC proposes to take NT site off Superfund list

NORTH TONAWANDA – The state Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking public comments by May 31 on its proposal to remove the old Schreck’s Scrapyard site on Schenck Street in North Tonawanda from the Superfund list of inactive hazardous waste sites.

A DEC announcement said the department believes the site has been remediated enough to be safe. Contaminated soil and buried drums on the site were excavated and disposed of off-site, while buildings were demolished and removed. Elevated levels of some metals still are present, but the DEC is ordering that the site be used only for commercial or industrial activities in the future, while use of untreated groundwater is barred.

Comments may be sent to project manager Glenn May, at the DEC, 270 Michigan Ave., Buffalo, NY 14203; emailed to glenn.may@dec.ny.gov; or made by phone at 851-7220.
