Jack Eichel showed what the hype is about. The United States showed that world championships are unpredictable.
Eichel had two assists Thursday, including one on a dazzling individual play, but Team USA sustained its first loss in a 5-2 setback to Belarus. The United States fell to 3-1 while Belarus improved to 3-0-1. The Americans failed to build off a 4-2 win over defending champ Russia earlier in the week.
Eichel pulled the United States to within 3-1 late in the second period after forcing a turnover, slipping the puck under the stick of a defender, pulling away from another and setting up Brock Nelson for an easy tap-in with a backhand pass.
Eichel, expected to be drafted second overall by the Sabres in June, earned another assist on a power-play goal while skating 16:44. He has points in two straight games.
The U.S. team plays again Friday against Denmark at 2 p.m. on NBCSN.
