The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team has lost starting forward Alexus Malone to transfer. The 6-foot Malone signed with Louisiana Tech, the school announced. Malone, who just finished her sophomore season, is from Oxford, Miss., 300 miles from Louisiana Tech. She will have to sit out the 2015-16 season.
Malone averaged 28 minutes, 10.6 points and 7.7 rebounds this season for UB. Her departure, along with the loss of Mackenzie Loesing to a career-ending ankle injury, means UB will be without its top four scorers from this season.
UB will return three players who saw extensive starting action in guards Stephanie Reid, Joanna Smith and Camera Miley. UB also has brought in a slew of recruits for the post positions. They include 6-3 Grand Island native Cassie Oursler, a transfer from Robert Morris, 6-1 Australian Courtney Wilkins, 6-5 Dutch player Mirte Scheper and 6-1 Mariah Suchan, who was a freshman this year.
“I feel like the coaching staff is really family oriented and it is close to home, which is good so my family can come see me play,” Malone said in a Tech release.
