July 10, 1934 – April 29, 2015
Edward S. Nowak, of Glenwood, a retired longtime art teacher in the Orchard Park school district, died last Wednesday in Buffalo General Medical Center. He was 80.
Mr. Nowak was born in Buffalo and attended local schools. After graduating from Pine Hill High School, he joined the Navy, serving from 1952 to 1955 as a medic.
Following his discharge, Mr. Nowak earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from what is now SUNY Buffalo State.
He began teaching in the Orchard Park school system in 1961. He started in the junior high school before moving to the high school, where he spent most of his 34-year career.
Mr. Nowak for many years oversaw set design for the high school musicals. He also briefly coached the baseball team, a position that fit his talents because he was a pitcher in his youth.
Mr. Nowak received several honors for his teaching before he retired in 1995.
He ran the education building at the Erie County Fair for a number of years and served as a judge with the Colden Arts Festival for a few years.
Mr. Nowak enjoyed boating, fishing, camping at Evangola State Park, gardening and playing the piano.
Survivors include his former wife, Ruth Ann Nowak; a daughter, Laura Pugsley; a sister, Adele Roycroft; and two grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, 5271 Clinton St., Elma.
