Myrella S. Nagel, won many area golf championships

Myrella S. Nagel, of Amherst, a champion golfer locally, died March 3 in Beechwood Nursing Home, Getzville. She was 94.

Born in Buffalo, the former Myrella Smith was a 1938 graduate of Amherst High School and a graduate of Smith College.

She won her first tournament, the Western New York Junior Girls Championship, in 1935, and went on to win many championships at Brookfield Country Club, Wanakah Country Club and the Country Club of Buffalo.

Mrs. Nagel enjoyed encouraging young people to take up the game. She established one of the first and most successful junior golf programs in the region at the Country Club of Buffalo in 1957.

Following the death of her husband, Carl J., in 1979, she traveled the world, playing courses from Europe to the Far East and New Zealand. She continued to play until she was 90.

She was a longtime member of the Women’s Golf Association of Western New York.

Survivors include a son, Carl E. “Rocky”; a daughter, Myrella “Suzi” Fiorentino; four grandchildren and a great-grandson.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 St. Gregory Court at Maple Road, Amherst.
