Erie County is offering federally funded cooling assistance this summer to residents who qualify.
The Department of Social Services has announced the opening of the Cooling Assistance Program, which will offer qualified households an opportunity to receive installation of one window air conditioner.
Households that received cooling assistance through the county’s Home Energy Assistance Program within the last 10 years, or households that have a working air conditioning unit that is less than five years old are ineligible for this program.
Residents who do meet the eligibility requirements may apply from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the county’s HEAP office, 291 Pearl St. Applications also may be submitted by mail. Residents may call the HEAP Application Request Line at 858-1969 for an application package.
Approved households will be provided with a list of qualified, state-approved area contractors to install the air conditioning units. Once notified by HEAP, vendors will coordinate set-up appointments with eligible residents.
Program funding is limited, so assistance will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
