April 30, 1980: Court ruling ushers in Buffalo's first female firefighters

In 1979, 14 women passed the Buffalo firefighter test. When the Class of 1980 was announced, there were 30 men, zero women.

A group of women, lead by future Deputy Commissioner Margaret Keane, went to court. Federal Judge John Curtin added nine women to the list. Among them would become the city’s first female fire eaters.
