SUNY Buffalo State College, looking to expand its Great Lakes Center Field Station in Black Rock, is asking the state for $19.6 million in capital money.
The college wants to use five acres of waterfront property to expand the field station’s research space and to add new classrooms.
The enhanced facility would be known as the International Center for Great Lakes Research, Education and Entrepreneurship.
The college recently submitted a proposal for the funding through the NY SUNY 2020 Round IV Challenge Grant.
The proposed new facility would have 24,015 square feet to accommodate experiential learning and expanded collaborations among Buffalo State, Erie Community College and the Buffalo Public Schools.
It also would build on existing collaborations with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper.
The Great Lakes Center already works with researchers from SUNY institutions, as well as institutions throughout the U.S. and around the world, including scientists from Argentina, Germany, Canada, Ireland and Belarus.
