Darien Lake Theme Park Resort will open for the season at the end of next week.
The park will debut two new rides this year, the result of a $2.5 million capital investment.
The first ride, Brain Drain, is a 70-foot-high waterslide. After riders enter an enclosed “vertical launch capsule” at the top of the slide, the floor drops out, sending the rider into a 38-foot-per-second free fall before looping around in 360-degree spirals and ejecting the rider into a pool of water. There are two slide lanes, each 333 feet long.
Rolling Thunder is a seven-story high-speed coaster that travels on a vertical, circular steel loop, whipping riders around and around the hoop – backward, forward, and upside down at 10 revolutions per minute. The ride can carry 24 to 32 passengers at a time.
The project received $180,000 in sales tax exemptions granted by the Genesee County Economic Development Center.
The park opens to the public at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9. Season ticket holders get a sneak preview and get to ride the rides from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 8.
