As the death toll goes higher from the massive earthquakes in Nepal over the weekend, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s office has provided the names of New York-affiliated charities that are assisting in relief efforts. Among them are:
American Jewish World Service, ajws.org/; American Nepal Medical Foundation, americanepalmedicalfoundation.com; AmeriCares, americares.org; CARE, care.org; Catholic Relief Services, www.crs.org; Direct Relief, directrelief.org; GlobalGiving, globalgiving.org;International Relief Teams; irteams.org; Operation USA, opusa.org; Save the Children, savethechildren.org; Seva Foundation, seva.org;United States Fund for UNICEF; unicefusa.org; World Help, worldhelp.net.
Consumers are warned to be vigilant when donating money, since scam artists take advantage of those willing to help in the aftermath of major disaster. Fraudsters commonly solicit money via telephone calls, mailings, social media posts and e-mails that lead to convincing, yet fake websites.
The New York State Attorney General has an online database of registered charities at www.oag.state.ny.us.
