Nightly closure of a 2.5-mile stretch of the Kensington Expressway will begin at 11 p.m. Friday for filming of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2,” the state Department of Transportation announced Monday.
The expressway canyon between the Scajaquada Expressway and Elm Street in downtown Buffalo will be the setting for car chases and helicopter scenes in the movie.
The eastbound Kensington is scheduled to be closed at 11 p.m. Friday and reopen at 4 a.m. Saturday. Motorists will be directed to follow a posted detour on Genesee Street to Harlem Road.
The scenes will be shot at night, which means the Expressway will close in both directions for 11 hours nightly between May 4 and 16, except May 10. The closures are expected to begin at 7 p.m. and continue overnight until 6 a.m.
Motorists will be directed to follow two posted detours. Eastbound traffic will be directed to use Genesee Street to Harlem Road, while westbound traffic will be directed to use Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, or Harlem Road to Genesee Street.
Buffalo Police will be on site to assist with traffic control, according to the state DOT.
