Where we live: Town of Tonawanda

Town of Tonawanda

Ken-Ton School Board member Todd Potter Jr. was selected last week by the Erie County Democratic Committee as their endorsed candidate for the Legislature’s 4th District.

Potter, 23, is a lifelong Tonawanda resident, a D’Youville College alumnus, and a member of the SUNY Buffalo Law School class of 2015. He was elected to the School Board in 2013.

The seat is currently held by Kevin R. Hardwick, a City of Tonawanda Republican and a political science professor at Canisius College. Hardwick, first elected to the Legislature in 2009 and re-elected in 2011 and 2013, is seeking another two-year term.

Potter proposes an increase in funding to Erie Community College’s north campus and advocates for a satellite campus on Grand Island due to the large number of students in the district that leave Erie County to attend community colleges in neighboring counties.

The district covers the City of Tonawanda, Grand Island and portions of the Town of Tonawanda and Village of Kenmore.

This week:

• The Ellwood Fire Company recruitment drive continues today from noon to 4 p.m. at the fire station, 1000 Englewood Avenue. Men and women 21 and over who reside in the district are welcome to attend and discover more about volunteer firefighting. Officers and firefighters will be present to answer questions about firefighting. There will also be demonstrations of the company’s apparatus.

• A Kenmore Planning Board meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Room 15 at the Municipal Building.

• Registration continues for the Town of Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center’s annual 5K Run, which will be held May 8. The registration fee is $20 until Friday, then will increase to $25. Call 876-7424 for more information.
