Helen L. Johnson, of Hamburg, a retired elementary school teacher, died Tuesday in Beechwood Homes, Getzville, under hospice care. She was 85.
Born in Hamburg, she was a 1948 graduate of Hamburg High School and a 1952 graduate of Fredonia State Teachers College. She earned a master’s degree from Buffalo State College with certification in administration and supervision.
Miss Johnson taught for 35 years in the Kenmore, Orchard Park and Hamburg schools, retiring in 1987.
In retirement, she worked with the Fredonia College Foundation, assisting students who were primary-grade teaching interns in the Hamburg schools. She endowed the Helen L. Johnson Legacy Scholarship at Fredonia for elementary education students.
She was a past co-president of the Hamburg Central PTA, National Education Association representative for Hamburg teachers and president of the Hamburg Teachers Association. She was a past vice president of the Hamburg High School Alumni Association.
She received a Friend of Education Award from the Hamburg Teachers Association and the New York State PTA Distinguished Service Award. She was a former president of the Hamburg Women’s Club and a member of the Hamburg Support Center, the Hamburg Learning Center, the Hamburg branch of the Red Cross, the Hamburg Central Credit Union and the Hamburg Counseling Center.
Miss Johnson, a longtime member of Hamburg United Methodist Church, served as chairwoman of the church’s Education Commission. She helped the Sunday school prepare programs, supported the Vacation Bible School and helped plan the opening of the Meeting House.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hamburg United Methodist Church, 116 Union St., Hamburg.
