Bisons returning home after loss

The Buffalo Bisons come home to Coca-Cola Field on Monday night with the best record in the International League even though their five-game win streak ended Sunday.

Philippe Aumont, a 6-foot-7, 260 pound right-hander from Quebec, and four other Lehigh Valley pitchers combined to scatter nine Buffalo hits in a 3-1 victory at Coca-Cola Park in Bethlehem, Pa.

Aumont shut out the Bisons on three hits through five innings, striking out two. Two of the hits against him, though, were doubles.

The Herd will open a four-game series against the Norfolk Tides on Monday night (6 p.m., Radio 1520 AM). Norfolk comes in having lost a second straight game to the Charlotte Knights after the teams were rained out on Saturday.

Buffalo won five of seven games on its week-long road trip after winning six straight at home. The Bisons own a 1½-game lead over second-place Pawtucket in the IL’s North Division. The PawSox were unable to take advantage of the Buffalo loss, losing at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 8-3.

No stopping him: One Bison the IronPigs pitchers did not tame Sunday was Chris Colabello, who went 3 for 4 for the second game in a row. In the four games at Lehigh Valley, Colabello was 9 for 18 with six RBIs, two doubles and two home runs. Colabello, who was the DH on Sunday, is batting .367.

Wasted chances: The Bisons had opportunities on Sunday, but went 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base. Buffalo had the bases full with one out in the sixth when Brad Glenn grounded into a double play. In the seventh, Sean Ochinko hit into a double play after Caleb Gindl and Andy Burns opened the inning with singles.

Buffalo’s run came in the eighth when Colabello drove an RBI single to center after a walk and an error put two runners on with no outs. However, Colton Murray got out of it by striking out Andy Wilkins and Brad Glenn before Gindl flied out.

Albers takes loss: Lefty Andrew Albers yielded all the IronPigs’ runs in his 6∑ innings. Darin Mastroianni scored in the first when he led off with a double and came around on two infield outs. In the fifth, Chase D’Arnaud doubled and scored on a single by Tyler Henson with two out. Chris Nelson singled with two out in the sixth and circled the bases on a double by Tommy Joseph.

Paid attendance: The IronPigs announced 9,650 for a sunny Sunday afternoon with temperatures reaching the low 60s in Bethlehem.

The records: Bisons 12-5, IronPigs 5-13. Lehigh Valley is now 1-7 against the Herd this season.

Monday’s probables: Right-hander Scott Copeland (2-0, 0.90) for the Bisons against lefty T.J. McFarland (0-2, 7.11) of the Tides. It’s Markdown Monday. All seats $8.
