LOCKPORT – David J. Mongielo, owner of an auto repair shop in the Town of Lockport, has announced his candidacy for Niagara County legislator in the 12th District. Mongielo, a registered Conservative, is running for the seat now held by Majority Leader Richard E. Updegrove, R-Lockport.
“I have decided to run for this position because I believe we need to have more transparency and accountability in county and state government. It would be an honor to be elected to office and that honor and trust should never be taken for granted. Our representatives need to be true public servants, and more responsive to the needs of people in our community. Niagara County is notorious for being one of the highest tax counties in the nation; based on the percentage values of our homes. I want to work to change that,” Mongielo said.
Mongielo said he opposes tax and electricity incentives for businesses, and said the Legislature has squelched public criticism for changing the rules for the comment period at its meetings, discouraging people from attending.
Mongielo sought the 12th District seat in 2011 in a last-minute write-in effort that garnered only 11 percent of the vote. In 2009 and 2013, he lost races for Town of Lockport supervisor.
