One of the largest classes of firefighter recruits in the history of the Buffalo Fire Department is currently being sworn in.
On Saturday, the ECC City Campus Auditorium was the site for the swearing-in of 62 recruits during ceremonies led by Mayor Byron W. Brown and Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield. This week, about 63 more recruits are expected to be sworn in.
The recruits will begin 12-week sessions at the Fire Training Academy. Those who graduate become members of the department. The last training class, for 37 recruits, was held in 2012.
The department currently has 592 firefighters and 113 vacancies.
