Work has begun on a sit-down restaurant near The Hatch where diners can enjoy Erie Basin Marina views, wood-fired pizzas and steak under glass.
“The covered pavilion where all the picnic tables were, that’s going to be the new restaurant, glass enclosed,” said Molly Koessler, who operates The Hatch, Hotel @ the Lafayette catering, The Foundry Lounge and banquets, and Acqua restaurant with husband William.
The Koesslers, who secured a lease on the circa-1981 hot dog stand and related facilities from the city last year, haven’t decided what to call the new place. Construction began this week. They plan to open it Aug. 15.
They do know it’ll have a full-service bar, about 60 seats. “We’re putting in a wood-burning pizza oven,” Molly Koessler said. “We’re also building this fabulous patio up on the grass off of that, and an awning over the bar area.” The air-conditioned glass-enclosed space will be abut 3,000 square feet, and the new patio about 1,600 square feet.
Besides pizzas, the menu will include appetizers, seafood, pastas, and steaks, she said. The Hatch will stay open with its line-up of grilled and fried foods sandwiches, salads, wraps, specials, she said.
In other news, this means the time-honored Buffalo tradition of seagull French-fry battles can continue.
