Organizers have canceled the first Startup Weekend session in the country dedicated to forging close ties between new tech companies and the sports industry, an event that was planned for May 1-3 on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
Buffalo Startup Weekend Sports! was canceled because the timing of the event didn’t work for college students, who are busy preparing for final exams and seeking summer jobs and internships, and for other potential participants, said Steve Poland, managing director of the Z80 Labs tech incubator and an organizer of the weekend. Organizers announced the cancellation on Tuesday through their Twitter account, and they plan to issue full refunds to everyone who registered for the event.
Buffalo Startup Weekend, part of the national Startup Weekend network, first was held in 2012 and is meant to encourage entrepreneurial activity in Buffalo.
This was the first Buffalo Startup Weekend planned for May, after the previous weekends were held in the fall. Poland said the Startup Weekend set for Oct. 23-25 will go on as planned. For more information visit buffalo.startupweekend.org.
