Hotel housekeeper caught on laptop camera stealing medicine, pouring water on keyboard

Erie County Sheriff’s detectives arrested a hotel housekeeper who was charged Wednesday with stealing prescription drugs from a guest at a Springville hotel chain.

Sheriff’s Deputies were first called to investigate the burglary on April 7 after a guest at the hotel reported that a prescription bottle containing four Adderall pills was taken from a personal bag left in his hotel room and that water was spilled over his laptop computer. The laptop was taken to the Sheriff’s Computer Forensic Examiner Deputy assigned to the Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory for additional investigation.

Video was eventually recovered by the computer forensics lab that showed a female subject taking the prescription bottle from the guest’s bag. The video also showed the subject taking a cup into the bathroom, then returning to the laptop and pouring water onto the keyboard. Using the recovered laptop video, Detectives were able to positively identify the subject as a female member of the hotel’s housekeeping staff.

Heidi Jankowiak, 30, of Franklinville was arrested and charged with felony Burglary, felony criminal mischief and petit larceny. Jankowiak was arraigned in Springville Village Court and is due to return to court on May 8.

Sheriff’s detectives said Jankowiak admitted that she intentionally damaged the laptop because she “could tell that it was recording” her actions at the time.
