A Canadian man who tried to smuggle two Albanians into the United States in his tractor trailer was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara to time served.
Tonin Ndoja, 50, had previously pleaded guilty to making a false statement to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer.
There was evidence that the Albanians paid Ndoja to help them cross the border in November, Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott A. Allen Jr. said.
Defense attorney Emily Trott challenged that claim.
Trott said her client feels shame.
“This is the only time he’s been involved in unlawful behavior," she said.
The two Albanians in the tractor trailer had previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of illegal entry and also were sentenced to time served.
