Bisons beat PawSox again for eighth win in nine games

The Buffalo Bisons arrived in Rhode Island on Sunday night a half game behind first-place Pawtucket in the North Division of the International League standings. They departed McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket on Wednesday afternoon with
a half-game lead over the Sox after their eighth win in their last nine games.

Chris Colabello led another clutch hitting performance by the Herd with four runs batted in as he went 4 for 5 with a home run in the 8-3 Buffalo victory in the rubber game of the series before an announced 6,396 on a sunny afternoon with 64-degree temperatures.

Wave ’em in: Bisons manager Gary Allenson needed only one inning from his bullpen in Tuesday night’s doubleheader split. Wednesday, the bullpen got in some work. Steve Delabar, Rob Rasmussen, Preston Guilmet and Bobby Korecky pitched three innings between them, allowing only one hit, striking out three and walking none.

Two-out hitting: The Herd scored all their runs after two were out in a 3-1 victory Tuesday night. Wednesday, five of the first six Buffalo runs scored after two were out – three each in the third and two in the fifth. Colabello singled to send home one of the runs in the third. The other two came home on a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball. Colabello had a two-run single in the fifth with one out, and Andy Burns came through with a two-out RBI single to make it 6-2.

Insurance man: Colabello homered off right-hander Zeke Spruill with two outs in the ninth for his team-leading third of the season. It followed a single by Andy Wilkins and provided some extra cushion for the Herd bullpen.

Knuckle dusting: Pawtucket starter Steven Wright struggled again. The right-handed knuckleballer has allowed 13 runs in 11 innings since coming down from Boston. He has 10 strikeouts, however.

The records: Bisons (9-4), Pawtucket (9-5).

What’s next: The Bisons were off to Allentown, Pa., for a four-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park (Radio 1520, 7 p.m.). Chad Jenkins (0-1, 5.87) of the Bisons is scheduled to face right-hander Paul Clemens (0-0, 3.00) for the IronPigs.
