April 22, 1975: 'County tosses city salad day a curve'

As Mayor Makowski proclaimed Salad Week in Buffalo, the folks from Heinz set out to make the largest salad ever assembled in Buffalo—a swimming pool filled with 600 heads of lettuce and cabbage.

But county inspectors stepped in to stop the serving of the sizable salad because it hadn’t been prepared in a proper kitchen. Meanwhile, 300 shoppers looking for a free lunch at Main Place Mall were about to walk away disappointed.
