Allegany County toddler who wandered away from home found safe

BELMONT – A 3-year-old girl who wandered away from her Allegany County home with the family dog was found safe a few hours later, State Police reported.

Troopers in Amity were notified shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday that the child was missing from her family’s Town of Birdsall home. It was determined she had walked out the back door with the family dog, and her mother called 911 after she was unable to locate the little girl on her own.

An air and ground search by several agencies followed. The family’s property connects with state land, which is heavily wooded and has a stream, police said.

At about 6:20 p.m., searchers found the girl approximately a mile east of her home, sitting by the streambed, troopers said. Though she appeared to be in good health, an evaluation revealed that she was suffering from mild hypothermia.

After the girl was reunited with her parents, she was taken by ambulance to Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville for further evaluation.
