State seeks to keep military bases

The state budget includes $3 million for research and retention efforts of military bases statewide, including the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, State Sen. Robert G. Ortt’s office announced Monday.

That brings the total of available funds for such efforts to a little more than $6 million, Ortt’s office said in a news release, thanks to funding rolled over from previous state budgets.

Ortt plans to work with the Niagara Military Affairs Council so a portion of the funding is used to protect the Falls air base.

The base has twice been targeted for closure and Ortt said there’s a good chance in a couple years the region will have to “fight hard to keep it off the chopping block again.”
