Michael McCarthy, quarterback for St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, has received the 2015 Western New York High School Football Player Call to Courage Leadership Award. McCarthy sat out last season after suffering a broken tibia at a fundraising event for his older sister, who passed away when she was 5. “In 30 years of coaching, I have never been associated with a young man who has faced so much adversity and tragedy at such a young age, but has leaned heavily on his faith in God to get through these tough times,” St. Joe’s football coach Dennis Gilbert said of McCarthy. The other finalists were Joseph DeGrood of Hamburg and Morgan Mariacher of Iroquois.
