City of Tonawanda
One Common Council member is seeking reelection, while a political newcomer has announced a bid for a seat.
Second Ward Councilmember Jackie A. Smilinich is seeking another term. She pointed to her work on bringing overnight parking to the city and a proposed land swap with the school district as examples of progress.
“During my first term I have been determined to be accessible to the residents of the Second Ward and have worked to understand their concerns or complaints,” she said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Sean M. Rautenstrauch has declared his candidacy for the 3rd Ward seat. A 20-year resident of the city and political newcomer, Rautenstrauch said he will seek the endorsement of the Democratic Party. The ward currently is represented by John J. Hall, a Republican. Council member terms are two years.
• The Common Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in City Hall, 200 Niagara St. An informal session begins at 6.
• The Tonawanda School Board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the High School library, following a public hearing on the veterans’ tax exemption at 6 p.m.
