Taste of Lockport to seek singing record

LOCKPORT – The organizer of the annual Taste of Lockport announced Sunday that she is hoping to set a world record at this year’s event – for singing, not eating.

Jennifer Serrano, whose company, Jenny Marketing Group, was hired by the Lockport Business Association to run the Taste this year, said she has contracted with Guinness World Records to send an official recordkeeper to Lockport July 5 to monitor an attempt to beat the record for the most people singing on a live radio broadcast.

The mark currently is held by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, which on Dec. 6 mustered 6,690 people singing Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” The Taste of Lockport’s preferred song is “Low Bridge, Everybody Down,” also known as “Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal.”

In order to have enough room for a crowd to break the record, Serrano said she is seeking permission from the city to use Main Street in addition to Ida Fritz Park, the usual location of the Taste. Serrano said she hopes the potential turnout will bring in more food vendors and sponsors.
