Canisius lax team romps

Junior Billy Jacobbi (Williamsville South) matched his career high with five points, three goals and two assists, and Canisius (3-11) posted its largest margin of victory in 14 years in a 20-6 men’s lacrosse victory over VMI in a nonleague game Sunday in Lexington, Va.

Tim Edwards chipped in a hat trick, while winning 10 of 15 faceoffs. Austin Romantic and Jeff Edwards added two goals apiece.

Christoper Kane (Timon-St. Jude), Sam Connors (Timon-St. Jude), Jake Giarrano (St. Francis), Coby Gould, Vince Gravino, Mike Perrino, Mike Vavonese, Adam Huber, Steve Coss and Ryan McKee had single goals for the Griffs. Senior Alex Govenettio (Lake Shore) and Jeff Wilson (Williamsville East) combined for eight saves.

The winning margin was the largest for Canisius since a 21-4 victory over Siena in 2001 and largest on the road since a 27-5 win at Manhattan in 1997.

Canisius (3-11, 2-3 MAAC) needs a win by two or more goals over Detroit in its regular season finale at 2 p.m. on Saturday to clinch a bid to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament.
