Canisius wins women’s lax title

Griffs win lax title

Canisius clinched the second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse regular season championship Saturday with a 13-10 win over Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J. It was the Golden Griffins’ 10th win in a row, a Canisius record in women’s lacrosse.

“Today was a fantastic win … we played lights out from Kayla Scully all the way up to our attackers,” said Canisius coach Scott Teeter.

By winning, Canisius (11-5, 8-0 MAAC) clinched the No. 1 seed in the MAAC playoffs May 1 and 3 and the right to host the semifinals and championship game. Canisius last won the regular season title in 2013 but has captured the playoff championship the last four years.

Junior Taylor Giglio led the victory with three goals and three assists. Tori Quin and Meghan Cuddy also had three goals each. MAAC Rookie of the Week Erica Edwards had two goals and an assist. The Griffs ran off four straight goals to take an 8-4 lead with 13:15 left in the first half. Canisius led, 10-6, at the half. Monmouth (10-5, 5-2 MAAC) got as close as 11-9 before Quinn buried a free position shot. Giglio’s third of the game with 8:20 made it 13-10.

Monmouth outshot the Griffs, 27-25, but Canisius led in ground balls (18-17) and draw controls (16-9.).

Scully was in goal for her 38th game at Canisius, tying a Griffs record.
