Both the Buffalo Jr. Sabres 18U and 14U teams were eliminated Sunday in quarterfinal play of the USA Hockey Tier 1 Youth Hockey nationals at Amherst Northtown Center.
The 18U team fell to the six-time national champion Shattuck St. Mary’s of Faribault, Minn., 4-2., the 14U Sabres lost to Michigan-power Honeybaked, 7-3.
Shattuck took a 2-0 lead in the 18U game on second period goals by Joachim Weberg and Vincent deMey. Ryan Peters scored for Buffalo at 6:47 of the third with assists from Matther D’Amico and Dominic Perna. Colt Conrad restored Shattuck’s two goal advantage at 9:43 before Josh Baisillo tallied his fifth goal of the tournament for the Jr. Sabres. An empty net goal by Colt Conrad of Shattuck ended the scoring with 1:21 left. Nicholas Vilardo made 27 saves for Buffalo which was outshot, 30-25.
The Buffalo 14U team led, 3-2, after one period then allowed five unanswered goals in a chippy game that saw 42 minutes in penalties and one match penalty called. Zachary Rehbaum, Jeffrey Walczak and Jack Tucker scored for Buffalo. Calien Kiefiuk and Jonathan Gruden scored two-goals each for Honeybaked which outshot Buffalo, 30-25 and will face Chicago Mission for the championship Monday morning.
