National Guardsman, 21, killed in collision with ambulance

YORKSHIRE – An Army National Guardsman from Olean was killed in a head-on collision with an ambulance on Route 16 in the Town of Yorkshire Saturday morning.

State Police in Machias said the victim, Brenden A. DeCarlo, 21, was driving north on Route 16 at 6:10 a.m. when he crossed into the southbound lane, colliding with the oncoming ambulance of Trans Am Ambulance Services.

Police said DeCarlo suffered a “traumatic blunt-force injury” and was pronounced dead in Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, Springville. The victim, police said, was a member of the Army National Guard based in Buffalo.

A Trans Am employee, Everett E. Retzel, suffered a minor wrist injury and was treated at Bertrand Chaffee, then released.
