Josh Baisillo scored two third-period goals and Michael Benaquist added a third for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres 18U team in a 3-1 victory over the Ontario (Calif.) Avalanche Saturday in the USA Hockey Tier I Youth Championships at Amherst Northtown Center.
The victory for the 18U Sabres (3-0) earned them a berth in Sunday’s quarterfinals for a noon game against Shattuck St. Mary’s (Minn.).
Baisillo scored on the power play to break a scoreless tie at 4:01 of the third. Ontario’s goal came with the extra man with only 51 seconds left in the game. Brian Kowalski made 26 saves for the Jr. Sabres.
The Jr. Sabres 14U team also advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-2 triumph over the Cleveland Barons at Northtown Center. Ethan Kirbis broke a 2-2 tie when he scored with 7 seconds left in the first period. The Jr. Sabres went on to scored four times in the second period, outshooting Cleveland, 16-2, and break the game open. Zachary Nazzarett scored twice for Buffalo. Jeff Walczak, Brandon Holland,, Angelo Camilleri, Matthew Doyle and Phillip Barilla had single goals.
The 14U Jr. Sabres will face Honeybaked (Mich.) at 8 a.m. Sunday in a quarterfinal.
