Alek Wochensky and his friends understand how vital pizza, subs and wings are to Buffalo's culture.
Bored on Christmas Night 2014, Wochensky -- the owner of Equality Knowledge & Light (EKL), a Buffal0-based culture firm that sponsors hip-hop acts -- and three of his old classmates from Springville High School decided to create a musical tribute to the three foods that permeate the local food scene.
Disgusted by the memory of their trip to Park City, Utah, on which they realized how feeble other cities are at mimicking Buffalo's comfort-food specialties, the friends knew our local quality shouldn't be taken for granted.
Over a span of 40 minutes, Wochensky and T.J. Crely -- along with support from Min Gil and Adam Haag -- devoured a few boxes of pizza, subs and wings, decided on a simple chorus and spewed out a few improv verses along the way. No stranger to beat-making, Wochensky used some old-school sampling and an Italian piano record to spice up the track.
The track sat unused for two months until Wochensky acquired a new camera for EKL. Looking for an opportunity to test out some of the slow-motion footage features and Adobe Premier, he got the friends back together to film the music video to "Pizza, Subs and Wings."
"It started as a huge joke," Wochensky admitted in a phone call last week. "It was completely natural, though, and as we went along, we wondered, 'Why is this turning out so good?'"
Watch the video, which now has over 2,000 views, below. Language and references may not be suitable for all audiences. Wochensky raps the first verse, while Crely takes over the second.
