Amherst teenagers fight with intruder in their house

An Amherst robbery suspect got more than he bargained for when two teenagers returned to their home while he was inside and ended up fighting with him.

At one point, the 17-year-old held the man while his 13-year-old sister punched the intruder and broke his sunglasses, Amherst police said.

The incident started about 1:11 p.m. Saturday, when the owner of a house on Ransom Oaks Drive returned home with his two children, and discovered an unfamiliar vehicle in the driveway. The father spoke with the female driver as his children entered the house. The father let the vehicle back out of his driveway, not knowing that at the same time, his children were encountering an intruder in the house, police said.

The children fought with the man inside the house, police said, but he escaped and was seen running toward a black Jeep on Ransom Oaks. Police put out a description of the vehicle, and Officer John McGarvey located it at 2760 Dodge Road.

After an investigation at the house, two people at the house were arrested.

Stacey Berke, 27, and Daniel Cimino, 38, both of the Dodge Road address, were charged with second-degree robbery, second-degree burglary and grand larceny.
