Anonymous tip leads Cheektowaga police to heroin seizure

An anonymous tip helped Cheektowaga police locate a plastic garbage bag containing a large number of heroin bundles and $2,000 in cash and arrest two suspected drug dealers, Assistant Police Chief James Speyer said Friday.

Almost two weeks ago the department got an anonymous tip via the Tip411 system about suspected drug activity around the Preston Road and East Delavan Avenue area near the Pine Lawn, United Catholic and Mount Calvary cemetery complex.

Lt. Thomas Gerace of the Vice, Gambling and Narcotics Unit began surveillance in the area this week and started noticing a vehicle frequently parked in the first block of Preston with a man standing outside it. The lieutenant then regularly saw a white sedan with no front license plate stop and hand the man something and drive off. The man then went into a Preston Road house for a few minutes. Next he would come out and get into the front passenger seat of a car with a woman driver that headed west toward Buffalo, the assistant chief said.

Late this week, Officer Bradford Hebeler stopped that same vehicle on East Delavan Avenue, detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana and spotted a marijuana cigar in the ashtray. He also found a large plastic bag containing numerous bundles of alleged heroin and more than $2,000 in cash.

Hebeler arrested Brittney Ridgeway, 26, of Cambridge Court, and Dellsean Hamilton, 26, of Dash Street, on charges of unlawful possession of marijuana, criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal possession of controlled substances with intent to sell. Both are free on bail and face further proceedings before Cheektowaga Justice Dennis T. Gorski, the assistant chief said.
