An eighth-grader from Mill Middle School in Williamsville will compete Friday in the 2015 New York State National Geographic State Bee in Albany.
This is the second straight year that Ethan C. McDonald, the son of Kathleen and Andrew McDonald, is participating in the state contest, which is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition.
Winners of school bees took a qualifying test that was submitted to the National Geographic Society. The society then invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each state – as well as the District of Columbia and U.S. territories – to compete in the state contests.
Each state champion wins prizes, including a medal, and a trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the national championship in May. The national champion wins a $50,000 college scholarship. lifetime membership in the society and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
