Members of Girl Scouts Cadette Troop 31749 have been busy over the past year working toward their Silver Award.
The girls, all eighth-graders at Heim Middle School in Williamsville, chose to turn their love of reading into a project to help put books in the hands of those who need them. They partnered with Gerard Place, a transitional home for homeless single parents and their children.
The Girl Scouts had a local author come to a meeting to explain the ins and outs of writing books for children and young adults. Some of the girls have written books that will be donated to Gerard Place. The girls also held book drives at their churches and at the Audubon Library in Amherst, where they collected more than 700 children’s books.
The girls toured Gerard Place and saw firsthand how things work there. They painted 28 bookcases so that each of the 14 units at Gerard Place will have two along with books that the girls selected for the children in each family.
On Friday, they finished their project and delivered the books and bookcases to Gerard Place.
The troop leaders are Susan Sniatecki and Kyle Rose DeRoo.
