NIAGARA FALLS – A man told police he caught sight of a burglary suspect fleeing the house as he helped an 86–year–old woman bring in her groceries at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of Third Street.
Another burglary had been reported previously in the same block, according to the witness.
Police arrived and found the door had been forced open, damaging the frame and lock. It appeared the suspect went through the woman’s jewelry box and took several rings and earrings. Loss was estimated at $500.
A blue bag found at the scene was being investigated for evidence and may contain the jewelry, reported police. Next to the bag police also found a carton of cigarettes on the floor that belonged to the victim.
The witness described the suspect as a white male with brown hair, wearing a blue jacket and heavy shirt. He ran out of a side door at the rear of the house and then into an alley before police arrived.
