St. Bonaventure student wins grant for school safety program

ALLEGANY – Alex Gu, a senior biology major at St. Bonaventure University from Chappaqua, has been awarded $66,028 from the State Farm Insurance Company to develop a safety program for local schools.

Gu, who plans to go to medical school after completing his undergraduate studies, is student chief of the university’s Medical Emergency Response Team and an emergency medical technician for Allegany Rescue and EMS Inc.

Through a program dubbed SafeTeen Coalition, Gu and fellow students Ryan Lim, Aayushi Sardana, Anna Martin, Indulaxmi Seeni, Carli Johnston, Stephanie Foster and Tim Parks plan to mentor local high school students to instruct elementary school students about safety issues. The program is slated to begin this week at the Allegany-Limestone Elementary School and expand to the Allegany-Limestone High School and later possibly to elementary schools in Portville, Hinsdale and Olean and to Archbishop Walsh High.
