Northtown hosting Tier I tournament

News Staff Reports

The latest stop in Western New York by the USA Hockey Championships comes courtesy of World Wrestling Entertainment.

Northtown Center at Amherst stepped up to be a last minute fill-in as host of the boys Tier I Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 USA Hockey Championships, which run Thursday through Monday at the four-rink facility across the street from UB Stadium. The tournament announced last year it would return to the area even though it wasn’t scheduled. A scarcity of hotel rooms due to Wrestlemania in the San Francisco/San Jose area this Sunday prompted the move.

Western New York will be represented by five teams as the Amherst Knights earned a bid in all three age groups for being tourney host. The Buffalo Jr. Sabres’ 14-under and 18-under teams also earned spots in the tournament.

Amherst’s 14-under team kicks off the action at 8 a.m. Thursday against Detroit Honeybaked. The Buffalo Jr. Sabres face Colorado at 10 a.m.

Amherst’s 16- and 18-under teams face Shattuck St. Mary’s (Minn.) at noon and 4 p.m., respectively.

Pool play runs through Saturday. Top teams advance to the medal round with champions to be crowned Monday. Tickets can be purchased at Northtown Center. A one-day pass is $15 while an all-inclusive tournament pass is $40.
