March 24, 1985: Christian Laettner and Nichols win state title

Before becoming one of America’s most hated athletes -- to the point that ESPN produced a documentary titled “I Hate Christian Laettner” -- the Angola native was winning championships with Nichols.

Thirty years ago, the world appeared to be Laettner’s. News Sports Reporter Mark Gaughan called him “6-feet,  7-inches of enormous potential”  as he led Nichols with 28 points.

"State title for Nichols"

"A teary-eyed George Laettner could manage to say little more than 'It's just incredible,' as he took photos of the Nichols' post-game victory celebration Saturday at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

"His son, Christian, had just scored 28 points to help Nichols demolish Wheatley of Long Island, 74-55, for the New York State Class C high school basketball championship."
