Kids Korner, the child care center used by veterans while receiving treatment at the VA Western New York Health Care Center in Buffalo, would stay open past the end of this year under new legislation co-sponsored by Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo.
Kids Korner in Buffalo was one of three sites nationwide set up as a pilot program in 2011. Higgins worked to get it extended in 2013 and 2014. The facility provided care for 1,379 children of veterans in 2012-13.
The current bill would allow VA medical centers across the country to use money from their budgets to set up their own child care programs.
“The Buffalo Kids Korner model works,” Higgins says. “It should remain open here and replicated to be offered to veterans receiving treatment at VA facilities across the country.”
