Man charged in fire that destroyed Brocton church

BROCTON – Chautauqua County sheriff’s investigators have charged a 32-year-old Dunkirk man in the November 2013 fire that destroyed the historic Tri-Parish Church on East Main Street in Brocton.

Investigators charged Daniel P. Frey over the weekend with third-degree arson following an indictment returned by a Chautauqua County grand jury, authorities said. Frey was arrested at his Dunkirk home without incident on Friday night. Sheriff’s officials said Frey was living on East Main Street in Brocton at the time of the fire, on Nov. 3, 2013.

The church, built in 1903, had been the home of three combined parishes for about 25 years, after Methodist congregations in Brocton and Portland and a Lutheran church in Brocton merged to form the parish.
